The history of the ConventGarten
In 1874, a restaurant with a ballroom opened here. Twenty years later, the first ship sailed through the Kaiser Wilhelm Canal – and the ConventGarten was there to witness it. It has weathered two world wars, a period of British occupation, a succession of owners and insolvency proceedings. It has risen from the ashes time and again, reopening time and again. Surviving for 150 years is no accident.

Impressions from our hotel
The history of the ConventGarten
1874

Opening of a restaurant with a ballroom
The ConventGarten opens its doors as a restaurant with a ballroom. People have been celebrating, dancing and dining here long before the first ships sailed along the canal.
1895

Opening of the hotel
With the ceremonial opening of the Kaiser Wilhelm Canal (now the Kiel Canal) by Emperor Wilhelm II, Rendsburg grew into a canal town. The ConventGarten expanded its facilities to include a hotel and has since been situated in a prime location on the world’s busiest man-made waterway.
1962
Inauguration of the new ballroom
With the opening of the refurbished ballroom, the ConventGarten is significantly expanding its facilities for events, concerts and social evenings.
1999

New management, new approach
The ConventGarten is changing hands and will be taken over by Jörg Förster. Its family-friendly atmosphere will be retained, whilst a more modern concept will be introduced.
2006

Refurbishment and modernisation
Under the vision of shipowners Klaus-Peter and Bernd Peterson, the building is being extensively refurbished and modernised. The hotel and restaurant are taking on a new lease of life with an upmarket ambience.
2020
Expansion of the event venues and acquisition of the ONNO Hotel
In March 2020, guests will have access to 72 double rooms and 8 suites, as well as a total of 8 function rooms. The ConventGarten is also set to gain a sister hotel: the ONNO Hotel by Norman, a boutique hotel in the heart of Rendsburg.
2025

New operator
In April 2025, Claas Normann Mäder-Rønnestad will take over the establishment as its new operator, with great respect for its history and a clear vision for the future.
